for More Info Spey casting and fishing with two handed rods is gaining increasing popularity with California shad, salmon, and steelhead anglers. Fish First! is hosting a unique spey casting instruction and steelhead fishing trip on the Lower Deschutes River through the Deschutes Angler Fly Shop in Maupin, Oregon. Owners John and Amy Hazel, and their staff are steelhead junkies and spey fishing enthusiasts. They and their staff are very knowledgeable spey casting and fishing instructors. John and Amy have just released a spey casting video titled, “Introduction to Speycasting”. The Lower Deschutes River, known for it's hard fighting red side rainbow trout and year round runs of steelhead, winds it way through a deep high desert canyon from Pelton Dam to the mouth of the Columbia River. Though steelhead can be found in the river all year, the best fishing in the lower river (from Maupin to the mouth) is from August through November. Steelhead on the Deschutes average 6-8 lbs and are hard fighters often leaping clear of the water several times. All fishing is done with floating lines on a down-and-across swing making this the perfect fishery for learning how to spey cast and fish for steelhead with a two handed rod. Low light conditions offer prime steelhead fishing. Spey casting instruction and fishing will be concentrated in the morning and evening, afternoon when the sun is high overhead will be reserved for relaxing and/or trout fishing. |
